The county consists of four regions. The Southern area includes the communities of Fortuna and Ferndale. Over half of the towns are located in the Humboldt Bay area and include Eureka and Arcata. Northern cities include McKinleyville, Trinidad and Orick. Eastern area includes Blue Lake, Willow Creek and Hoopa.
Housing Options
Homes in Ferndale range in price from the mid $200’s up to $500,000 with the median at $300,000. The Victorian Village of Ferndale was so named for the waist high lush ferns that grew this side of the Eel River and is named "Prettiest Painted Place in America". Founded in the 1800’s, Ferndale today remains virtually unchanged and has a population of approximately 1400.
Trinidad offers a variety of choices in homes including property with ocean views or more secluded country lots. The median price is $300,000. Trinidad is the smallest and oldest city in the district with a population just under 500 residents. It is a thriving artist colony with picturesque views of the ocean and coast.
Within a few miles of Eureka, is Cutten, population 3100, offering affordable housing with a median price of $235,000.
Blue Lake is a picturesque town a few miles inland from Arcata. With a population of about 2000, Blue Lake is an ideal place to call home with its low crime rate, mild climate and affordable median housing price of $185,000.
Hydesville, population 1300, offers a small town feel with all the shopping, and cultural advantages of nearby Fortuna. The median home price here is $230,000.

Things to See
These communities also offer many sites to see. Take a drive on The Avenue of the Giants, a 31 mile drive through the redwoods along the Eel River on which the Redwoods State Park is located. Richardson Grove State Park, one of the oldest state parks, with 900 acres of redwoods is located in the southern part.
Beautiful Weather & Scenery
The sand-swept, pristine coastline consists of over 100 miles of natural beauty and rugged terrain with moderate climate and temperatures. Although the average rainfall is about 40 inches per year, the majority of the rain falls during the winter months, allowing plenty of sunny days to be enjoyed.
Education
Education plays an important role and Humboldt County schools are some of the best in in the state.Many of the schools are Distinguished Award Winners and have a very low teacher to student ratio.
